Cody Smith brilliant in Jr. Miners nets

2021-02-16

Jr. Miners home this weekend to Scotians

The Antigonish AA Munro Jr. Bulldogs and the Jr. Miners both evidently have ice water in their veins as neither team is giving an inch in the race for first place in the Sid Rowe Division off the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League.  With wins by both teams Sunday evening, the Jr. Bulldogs at 9-0-1 have 19 points and the Jr. Miners are now 8-2-2 for 18 points.  The advantage is with the Bulldogs right now as they do hold a pair of games in hand on the Jr. Miners.  Looking at Sunday night action:

Jr. Miners  3   Pictou  1

Cody Smith was spectacular in nets for the Jr. Miners before a visiting crowd in Trenton as he stopped 43 of 44 shots including a penalty shot for a .977 save percentage as the Jr. Miners defeated the hometown Scotians 3-1.  The teams played to a first period scoreless draw before Chad ONeill with only 17 seconds played in the second period put the Jr. Miners up 1-0.  Blake Cox followed with a marker for the Jr. Miners who took a 2-0 lead going into the third.  The Jr. Miners scored quickly again to begin the third as Nathaniel Fuller tallied 28 seconds after the opening face-off to begin the third to go up 3-0.  With just 1:14 showing Luke Young finally put one past Smith with the Scotians on the power-play to make the final 3-1 Jr. Miners.  The Scotians missed scoring earlier in the game when they could not connect on a penalty shot opportunity.  It enabled the Jr. Miners to take a 3-0 lead after two periods. Jack Graham played a great game for the Scotians in a losing cause as he stopped 36 of 39 shots for a .923 save percentage.  Pictou outshot the Jr. Miners 44-39 including 19-9 in the third and final period.  The Jr. Miners are now 8-2-2 for 18 points and second place in the Rowe Division while Pictou is now 3-5-0 for six points.
