Miners give Cumberland the Blues during Minor Hockey Night

December 5, 2010. In the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League the Cumberland County Blues were at the Bay Plex in Glace Bay to play a rare early Sunday evening 6:30 start. In a game, which saw the lead change hands six times the Blues jumped on board first, with just 6:04 remaining in the period, when Jeff Deruelle finished on the power play, with Seth Crowe and Zach Carson. Almost three minutes later the much-improved Miners struck to tie the game at one when Jordan Langlois converted with Eugene Fraser and Brett McCarron on the power play. A minute later Jordie Shaw regained the Blues’ lead at 2-1 from Jeff Deruelle and Geoff Burke. Towards the end of the period the Blues ran into some penalty trouble with the Miners playing 5-3  The Blues were able to sustain the Miners' attack but both penalties carried over into the second period.

 

Despite trailing 2-1 the Miners owned the shot clock at 13-9.

 

In the second the Blues barely killed off both penalties before Mitch Carabin beat Nathan Kelly to deadlock the game at two. Jordan Langlois drew the only assist. With just over four minutes remaining, in the second period, Jordie Shaw gave the lead back to the Blues, an even-strength goal and his second of the night, from Jeff Deruelle.

 

The Miners held a slim 9-8 shot advantage for a two-period total of 21-17.

 

In the third and for the third time in the game, and under two minutes in, Mitch Carabin knotted the game at three an even-strength goal, from Ben Tadlock and Ryan MacDougall. Then less than two minutes later the Miners took the lead for the first time on the power play, when Corey Langlois pulled the trigger from Brett McCarron. The lead did not last very long before Jeff Deruelle, his second on the night and also fourth point, finished with Kevin Cormier and Jordie Shaw his third point, to get the Blues even at four. Seventeen seconds later the Miners banged home their fifth goal when Mitch Carabin finished with Liam MacDougall and Ben Tadlock to take a 5-4 lead.

 

Exactly two minutes later speedy winger Geoff Burke scored on a breakaway to tie the game once again at five. Two newly acquired defensemen, for the Blues, Brandon Rumble and Kevin Cormier picked up the assists. Then with less than five minutes to play the Miners reclaimed the lead once again when Mitch Carabin, his fourth goal of the night scored unassisted to give the Miners a 6-5 lead. With just over three minutes to play the Miners, on the power play, padded their lead to 7-5 when Corey Langlois, his second from Brett McCarron and his third point.

 

Final shots were 35-33 in favour of Glace Bay with Jon MacKinnon picking up the win while Nathan Kelly was tagged with the loss.

 

The come-from-behind win for the Miners now puts them tied with Antigonish for third spot in the Sid Rowe Division with the Miners playing four fewer games.
