Miners Sweep Weekend Games, 3 Points up on Scotians

2011-02-14

The start to this game was delayed somewhat as the Glace Bay team experienced bus problems.

Another key match-up is over in the Sid Rowe Division where the Glace Bay Junior Miners and Pictou County Scotians are engaged in a catfight to secure the final play-off spot in that division. Currently, and prior to tonight’s game, the Miners sit one point ahead of the Scotians but the Scotians have one game in hand. The teams will have a home-and-home series starting tonight in Trenton and resuming in Glace Bay Saturday, February the 19th, at the Bay Plex.

The start to this game was delayed somewhat as the Glace Bay team experienced bus problems. The long trip did not seem to bother Glace Bay as they jumped on the scoreboard first when Jeff MacKinnon finished on a play with Brett McCarron and call-up Craig Pasher. Four and one half minutes later the Scotians’ Julian Perrotta knotted the game at one, on the power play, from Tyler Ross and Chase Kirkendall. Both teams played a hard hitting, end-to-end first period tied at one.

Shots favoured the Miners 16-9.

Almost nine minutes into the second Mitch Carabin scored the only goal of the period, on the power play, to give the Miners a 2-1 lead. RJ Barrett picked up the only assist on the play. The shift seemed to swing to the Scotians as they out shot the visitors 13-11 but Jon MacKinnon stopped everything shot his way.

The torrid pace continued into the third period with the Miners still holding the lead. With only nine seconds remaining, and Melvin Day on the bench for an extra attacked, the Miners’ Eugene Fraser found an empty net to give Glace Bay a 3-1 win and move three points up on the Scotians for the final play-off spot in the division.

Final shots favoured the Miners 39-29.

The teams will meet again in Glace Bay Saturday night and the Miners will finish out the regular season against the Windsor Royals on Sunday afternoon.

Both of these final 2 regular season games for the Miners will be "Kids get in FREE Day" as any kids under 14 years of age will be admitted to the game for free.  Special thanks to our sponsor SEASIDE COMMUNICATIONS for presenting these 2 great games for the kids.
