March 5, 2011. Saturday night, in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League, the quarterfinals resumed.
In the battle of Cape Breton the Strait Pirates were finally able to put away the stubborn Glace Bay Junior Miners 4-2 and take the series four games to two. The Pirates opened with a 3-0 series lead only to see the gritty Glace Bay team battle back to 3-2 where all but one of the games were decided by a single goal.
In Glace Bay the teams played a scoreless first period with the Pirates holding a 12-8 shot advantage.
In the second the Junior Miners jumped into a 2-0 lead on two power play goals by RJ Barrett. Before the end of the period the Pirates fired two of their own from Marc Bourgeois and David Greencorn getting help from Jeremy Sheppard, Marc Fougere, Dale MacIntosh and KJ MacNeil.
Shots in the period favored the Miners at 11-8 but the Pirates had a slim two-period total of 20-19.
In the third the Pirates added two unanswered goals when Sheppard finished with Matt Miller and Willie MacDonald. Then with 52.6 seconds remaining, in the period and Jon MacKinnon on the bench for an extra attacker, Nick Allard iced the win for the Pirates with an unassisted, empty net goal.
In what probably was the best series to date the never-say-die Miners will say good-bye to just two overagers captain Mitch Carabin and Jeff MacKinnon and wish them well in any future endeavours.
