Miners Look To Extend Winning Streak

2012-01-21

GLACE BAY — The surging Glace Bay Junior Miners look to continue their march up the standings with a pair of Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League games at the Bayplex this weekend.

The Miners, winners of six straight, play host to the Cumberland County Blues tonight at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday at a new start time of 2 p.m.

Glace Bay (11-11-1-1, 24 points) sit in third place in the Sid Rowe Division standings and is six points back of both the Antigonish Bulldogs (14-9-0-2) and Strait Pirates (15-8-0-0) for first place.

The Miners are coming off a pair of wins last weekend, besting the Pictou County Scotians by a 3-1 score on Sunday after a crucial 7-3 victory over the Bulldogs on Saturday. Glace Bay is unbeaten thus far in 2012 and hasn’t lost a game since an 8-6 setback to the Pirates on Dec. 2.

The trio of Jordan Langlois, Brett McCarron and Cal McNeil have been carrying the offence with their play this season. Langlois leads the way with 14 goals and 16 assists for 30 points in 23 games, while McCarron (11 goals, 15 assists) and McNeil (seven goals, 17 assists) aren’t far behind.

A big addition for the Miners has been the signing of Colin MacKinnon of Sydney River. MacKinnon, who played the last two seasons with the Truro Bearcats of the Maritime Junior ‘A’ Hockey League, has been on fire since joining the Miners two weeks ago. He has five goals and five assists in four games.

But Cumberland is looking to gain ground on the Miners. Cumberland is in fourth spot with an 8-13-1-2 mark for 19 points. The Blues also boast the top three scorers in the league in Jordie Shaw (34 goals, 21 assists), Zach Carson (12 goals, 37 assists) and Geoff Burke (17 goals, 32 assists).
