Strait Pirates Rally to Beat Junior Miners

2012-02-02

Thursday, February 2, 2012. Thursday night in Port Hawkesbury the Battle of Cape Breton resumed with the Strait Pirates prevailing with a 3-1 win over the Glace Bay Jr. Miners in a January 27th snowstorm make-up game.

The Pirates trailed 1-0 after forty minutes but stormed out of the gate in the third period firing 3 unanswered goals to take the win and move three points up on the Antigonish Bulldogs. In two previous meetings with Glace Bay the Pirates took an 8-6 win at home then lost 3-2 in Glace Bay. The Pirates have 7 remaining while the Junior Miners have 6 with three left against the Pirates.

At the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre Colin MacKinnon notched his 7thgoal in 7 games, on the power play, with just under 3 minutes to play in the opening period to give the Glace Bay team a 1-0 lead. Jordan Langlois and Brett McCarron picked up the assists.

Despite trailing 1-0 the Pirates had a slight edge on the shot clock at 12-10 after the first period.

In the second the teams played a very quick scoreless period with hardly any stoppages. The Pirates again had an edge on the shot clock at 11-8 for a 2-period total of 23-18.

In the third the Pirates, sensing an upset, stormed out of the gate with 3 unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead and hold on for the win. Randy Henley started things rolling for the Pirates, just under 5 minutes in from Matt Miller and Eric MacKinnon. Eight seconds later Jeremy Sheppard, with his team-leading 19th goal of the season, had the Pirates up 2-1 from Nick Allard and Marc Bourgeois. Then midway through the final twenty Allard had the Pirates up 3-1 from Sheppard and Bourgeois. For Allard it was his team-leading 48th point.

Brennan Laite picked up his 16th win on the year and the Pirates 18th to improve to 18-9-0-0. Scott MacDonald took the loss for Glace Bay. The Jr. Miners, the hottest team in the league at present, slip to 13-13-1-1. For the Junior Miners this was just their 3rd loss in the last 15 games, 2 of which came at the hands of the Strait Pirates.

Final shots were 37-25 Pirates.

Both teams are back in action this weekend when the Pirates host the Cumberland County Blues on Friday night. Then on Saturday the Jr. Miners entertain the Antigonish Bulldogs at the Bay Plex.
