Glace Bay, NS, May 25, 2012 - The Glace Bay Junior Miners have selected Ryan Groom (Cape Breton Tradesmen) and Ryan Jackson (Glace Bay Panthers High School) as their 2012 territorial picks, the team announced Friday evening.

Each team in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League is permitted to select up to two players from their home territory who played their Peewee eligibility in the home Association. They have until Thursday, May 31st to claim their selections.

Groom, a 17 year-old speedy forward from Glace Bay, spent last season with the Cape Breton Tradesmen of the Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League and was an affiliate with the Junior Miners in the playoffs. With the Tradesmen, he finished 2nd on the team in scoring where he racked up 18 goals, 19 assists for 37 points in 38 games played while also racking up 60 minutes in penalties. Earlier this month Groom attended a tryout camp for the New York Jr. Gladiators of the International Junior Hockey League.

Jackson, also 17 years old, lives in Albert Bridge and is an offensive defenseman who spent the past 3 seasons patrolling the blueline for the Glace Bay High School Panthers. As team captain this season with the Panthers, he recorded 6 goals, 10 assists for 16 points in 21 games along with 10 penalty minutes. During the past season Jackson was named as the leagues top defenseman, while also earning a spot on the 1st All Star Team.

“We've been very fortunate the past couple of seasons to have some very good talent coming up in the Glace Bay Minor Hockey system,” says co-owner & General Manager Jordan Evasuk-MacDonald. “There are some very good players in the local area and our goal is to have as many of them as we can playing for us in the future.”

With their territorial picks now made, the Junior Miners will now focus on their upcoming bid presentation for the right to host the 2014 Don Johnson Cup, which takes place Saturday, June 2nd at the Hockey Nova Scotia offices in Dartmouth.
