The Junior Miners opened their 3rd season in winning fashion Saturday night as the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League's newest entry, Valley Maple Leafs made their only trip to the BAYplex.

The Junior Miners edged the Maple Leafs 7-6 in a shootout. The teams were even at 2 after one; the Maple Leafs held a slim 4-3 lead after two and the Miners outscored the visitors 3-2 in the third scoring the tying goal with just over 2 minutes remaining. The 5-minute overtime period settled nothing until Jordan Langlois’ shootout goal stood as the winner. Langlois also netted the tying goal for the Miners plus added an assist on the Miners’ second goal. Also scoring for Glace Bay were John Walsh, Tyler Pyke, Austin Bates, Ryan Bursey and Zach Walsh.

David Hayes continued to lead the way for the Maple Leafs picking up hat trick to go with an assist. Brady Fisher, Brandon Parker and Jory Uhlman also scored for the visitors. Uhlman also chipped in with 2 assists.

Jake McKendry picked up his 1st win in a Miners’ uniform while facing 33 shots. Olafr Schmidt was tagged with the hard-luck loss.

Action continues Sunday night when the Junior Miners are in Trenton to meet the Pictou County Scotians for a 7:30 tilt.
