Don Koharski To Put On Ref Clinic In Glace Bay

2012-11-01

GLACE BAY — Former NHL referee Don Koharski will be in town this weekend when he hosts 40 officials for a clinic at the Bayplex.

Koharski, a Dartmouth native, worked over 1,700 games in the NHL and is the current manager of officials for the league. He’ll meet with the participating officials on Friday and conduct both on-ice and classroom sessions on Saturday.

Joining Koharski will be NHL linesman Matt MacPherson and Hockey Nova Scotia president Randy Pulsifer. Pulsifer is also a former referee-in-chief with Hockey Nova Scotia.

In regards to this weekend, Hockey Nova Scotia believes that this is an important weekend to promote the development of the product,” Pulsifer said in a release. “We need minor associations to focus on the skills needed to play our game. Increasing a child’s skill level is directly linked to enjoyment in the game. Children (players) strive to succeed and by supporting their growth hopefully they will have a positive hockey experience.”

The president of the Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association, James Edwards, said there are still openings for the classroom session on Saturday. Those interested can call the Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association office at 842-1533 or Edwards at 737-1320.

We see this as a significant training opportunity for referees and linesmen from all over Cape Breton, Don Koharski is a respected official and instructor worldwide and to have him here in our backyard helping us make hockey fun and safe for everyone is quite a coup,” said Edwards.

Koharski will be the subject of an armchair interview session with Dave LeBlanc at the Bayplex’s community room Saturday at 3 p.m., where fans will be able to ask him questions about his officiating days or hockey in general. He will also drop the puck at the Glace Bay Junior Miners game at 6:00 p.m against the Cumberland Blues.
