Miners Complete Regular Season On High Note

Just the one game Sunday night, in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League, saw the Glace Bay Jr. Miners nip the Pictou County Scotians 5-4 in a shootout. Ryan Jackson’s goal stood as the winner as the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League regular season drew to a close.
In Trenton Scott MacLean, with the only goal of the period, had the Scotians sitting on a 1-0 lead going into the first intermission. Mitch Watters and Sean Tyler picked up the assists.
In in the period favoured the Scotians 17-13.
In the second Lucas Eshelman had the Scotians up 2-0, on the power play, from Sean Tyler. Just past the mid point of the period Junior Miners’ centreman Chris Ross had the lead cut to 2-1 from RJ Barrett and Kraig Pasher. Two minutes later Ben Crowell restored the Scotians 2-goal cushion at 3-1, a power play goal, from Brandon MacKenzie and Matt Oldfield. The Miners managed to get to within one at 3-2, a power play goal, by RJ Barrett from Tyler Pyke and Kevin Cormier.
The Scotians again controlled the shot clock at 19-12 for a 2-period total of 36-25.
Two minutes twenty-two seconds into the third period Junior Miners’ Tyler Pyke, with his 16th of the year, had the teams deadlocked at three with Brett Simmons picking up the single assist. Then with exactly 7 minutes to play Brandon Verge notched a short-handed goal to give the Scotians a 4-3 lead. The goal was Verge’s 36th of the year and gave the Pictou forward the league scoring title with 62 points one better than Miners’ forward Jordan Langlois who picked up 6 assists on Saturday night to draw the players even at 61 points apiece. Langlois was held off the scoresheet in Trenton.
Then with just 36 seconds remaining Sean Ferguson knotted the game at four from Chris Ross and Brett Simmons.
The five minute overtime period settled nothing until Jackson’s shootout marker stood as the winner.
The Junior Miners capped off a very successful season on 25 wins with only 5 regulation time losses to go with 3 shootout losses and 1 overtime loss.
The Junior Miners will begin their best-of-seven Sid Rowe semi-final against the Antigonish Bulldogs Saturday night in Glace Bay.
