It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the sudden and untimely death of our dear father, grandfather, and brother, Leonard Alexander MacDonald on Sunday, March 3, 2013, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, at the Corazones Unodos Heart Institute.

Born July 6, 1951, in Glace Bay, Leonard was the youngest son of the late John A. and Hazel MacDonald.
Leonard was a devoted Catholic and a practising member of Holy Family and St. Anne’s Parishes.

Leonard was preceded by his loving wife, Darlene Evasuk-MacDonald who passed away suddenly on May 27, 2008.
Leonard is survived by his two children, Jennifer and Jordan Evasuk-MacDonald (Tiffany) and three grandchildren, Ethan, Stephen and Lucas. One of Leonard’s greatest pleasures was spending the weekends with his three grandsons. He enjoyed attending their school and sporting activities and was looking forward to the day when he could include his youngest grandson Lucas on their adventures.

Also surviving are brothers, Douglas (Patricia) of Ottawa, Joseph (Margie) of Glace Bay, Allan (Eileen) of Oakville; and sister, Mary J. (Michael) of Augusta, GA.

Leonard attended schools at St. Anne’s, St. Michael in Glace Bay, and graduated from Saint Francis Xavier University in 1974. He was employed with MacLeod-Lorway Insurance and worked in the insurance industry for over 35 years. Leonard was a director on the executive and proud supporter of the Glace Bay Junior Miners Hockey Club. He attended all the games, at home and on the road.

Leonard enjoyed vacationing during the winters in the Dominican Republic, and during the summer months, he spent his time “On the Mira” at the family cottage of the late Billy and Francie Evasuk. Leonard was an active participant in the camp fires, boating and water skiing activities and will be missed by all his cottage friends.

Visitation is Tuesday, March 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at Curry’s Funeral Home, 775 Main St., Glace Bay. A funeral mass will be celebrated Wednesday, March 13 at 10 a.m. in St. Anne’s Church. The Rev. Leo Boone will be officiating. Interment will be in Holy Family Cemetery.

Donations in Leonard’s memory can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or charity of choice.
