Miners And Pirates Split First Two

2013-03-17

In the Battle of Cape Breton for the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Sid Rowe Finals, the Glace BayJunior Miners and Strait Pirates split the first two games this weekend.

Stait Pirates took Game #1 by a score of 2-1, and the Junior Miners came back in Game #2 to win by the same score.

After a long 14 day lay-off, the Junior Miners seemed to come out a little flat on Friday night and didnt have their usual jump which cost them on the scoreboard, as they fell to the Pirates by a score of 2-1.

At 12:07 of the first, Pirates Evan Wright tipped home a point shot high over the shoulder of McKendry for the first goal of the series, which McKendry had no chance on.

Barely over a minute later, Sean Ferguson stole the puck from the Pirates defence and would go in alone on Schlotzhauer and make no mistake to tie the game as he buried home a rocket.

However, just over 2 minutes later, Pirates Keenan Lima would score the go ahead goal and thats the way it would remain with no scoring in the 2nd or 3rd period. Final shots on goal in the game were 40-22 for the Junior Miners with both goaltenders making some miraculous saves.

Game #2 on Saturday night, the Junior Miners would get their revenge and skate to a 2-1 victory to even up the series at 1-1.

With no goals in the first period, Eugene Fraser would put the Miners on the board at the 3:47 mark by going top shelf over the right shoulder of Schlozhauer for the 2nd periods only goal.

In the 3rd, affiliate player Colby Tower evened up the game on the powerplay at 12:56 but with 5:22 remaining in regulation, Kyran Fogarty would recieve a pass from Fitzgerald of the Miners defence and make no mistake on finding the back of the net.

The Pirates outshot the Miners 28-24 in a game that saw a goaltending clinic being put on at both ends of the ice.

The next two games, will be played at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Center on Friday March 22nd and Saturday, March 23rd. Both games start at 7:30 pm.

Come on up and help cheer on your Glace Bay Junior Miners!!!
