2013-10-06

Zack Walsh earns the Golden Hardhat

At the BAYplex in Glace Bay on Saturday night, the Junior Miners soundly whipped the Valley Maple Leafs 10-2 to take both ends of a home-and-home series.

Last Sunday, in Berwick, the Junior Miners shut out the Valley team 3-0 handing the Valley team their first loss of the season.  Nothing changed this week, as the Miners continues their domination of the cross province rivals.

In Glace Bay,  the Junior Miners were led by second year player Zach Walsh who tallied 4 points, with three goals and an assist. Rookie Mark Gouthro scored twice on the night with the second coming from center ice.  Jordan Langlois, last years team points leader picked up a pair of tallies giving him his 4th and 5th in only 5 games.  Singles went to Kyran Fogarty, Colton Abraham and Andrew MacPhee. First year Miner Drew Wilcox aided the cause with four assists.

Colin Gillis and Matt Viney managed the goals for the Valley.

Glace Bay led 3-0 after twenty minutes on 17 shots against Liam Cavanaugh; Mitchell Culley seen the score become 7-2 after two with another 15; then added three unanswered goals in the third on the return of Cavanaugh with an additional 16 shots.

Nick Walsh picked up his third win of the year while Liam Cavanaugh was charged with the loss.

Final shots were 48-31 Glace Bay.

With the win the Miners improve to 3-0-2-0, good for first in the leagues young season, while the Maple Leafs, who started the year at 3-0 fall to 3-3-0-0.
