In Glace Bay the Glace Bay Jr. Miners nearly blew a 4-2 third period lead before hanging on and defeating the Eastern Shore Junior Mariners 5-4 in a shootout.
In the first Jr. Miners’ Brett Simmons and Mike Gouthro sandwiched a Junior Mariners’ goal by Dominic Howell to take a 2-1 lead to the dressing rooms after twenty minutes.
Shots in the period favoured the Junior Mariners 15-12.
In the second Mariner forward Jordan Cox fired an unassisted, short-handed goal to tie the game at two before Andrew MacPhee’s power play goal from John Michael Walsh and Chris Ross had the Jr. Miners leading 3-2 after forty minutes.
Shots in the period favoured the Jr. Miners 11-9 for a slim 24-23 advantage to Eastern Shore.
In the third Tyler Pyke, notched his first of the year, an unassisted marker giving Glace Bay a 4-2 lead with 8 minutes to play. The Junior Mariners managed to get to within one, at 4-3, when Matt Calder picked up a power play goal before Tyler Somers grabbed his 6th of the year and a 4-4 draw with just 50 seconds showing on the clock.
Shots in the period favoured the Junior Mariners 18-13.
The 5-minute overtime settled nothing. Then with each team sending five players to centre ice Brett Simmons’ shootout goal, and second of the night, stood as the winner .
Nick Walsh picked up his 4th win of the year facing 45 shots while Matt McMinn took the tough loss facing 38 shots.
The Glace Bay Jr. Miners continue to lead the Sid Rowe Division with 15 points four better than the Strait Pirates at 11 points.
