Miners Regulation Undeafeated Streak comes to a close

2013-10-28

It took 10 games to happen, but the Glace Bay Jr Miners streak of being the final team in the NSJHL to remain undefeated in regulation time has come to an end.

In Trenton, midway through the opening period, veteran Lucas Eshelman notched a power play goal from Brandon Verge and Matt Oldfield. Two minutes later Eshelman struck again with an unassisted tally, his second of the night, and the Scotians taking a 2-0 lead to the dressing rooms.

Despite trailing 2-0 the Glace Bay Jr. Miners held a strong 20-10 shot advantage after twenty minutes.

The Scotians went up 3-0 on a Brandon Verge power play goal from Lucas Eshelman and Steven MacKenzie 8 minutes into the period. Pictou goaltender Ben Goss  was in top form handling all 15 Glace Bay shots for a total of 35 after forty minutes.

In the third Glace Bay rallied for 2 quick goals to get to within one at 3-2 when speedster Chris Ross finished with Andrew O’Brien and Andrew MacPhee then a minute later Ryan Jackson from John Michael Walsh and Drew Wilcox.

Fearing a repeat, of last Sunday night when the Scotians took a 4-1 lead into the third period, only to lose 7-6 to East Hants the Scotians dug in and were able to hold off the Jr. Miners and pick up the much needed win.

Ben Goss was stellar in goal for the Scotians handling all but 2 of 49 shots while Scott MacDonald took the loss for Glace Bay.

Despite the loss the Glace Bay Jr. Miners still hold down top spot in the Sid Rowe Division.
