Jr Miners Split Weekend

2014-01-19

The Jr Miners sank the Pirate ship again on Friday night in Cheticamp, but then took a night off against the Scotians for Hockey Day in Canada on Saturday.

The Glace Bay Jr. Miners dumped the Strait Pirates 4-1 in Cheticamp to now take control of the ‘Battle of Cape Breton’ four games to one while outscoring their island rivals by a huge 27-10 margin. The Strait Pirates moved this home game to the Cabot Trail Arena in recognition of several team members from the Cheticamp area. The extra mileage did not deter the Jr. Miners as they picked up their 20th win, tops in the league. Ryan Bursey led the Jr. Miners with a pair of markers to go with an assist. Kyle Beck and Drew Wilcox also scored for Glace Bay. Matt Papineau had the lone goal for Strait. The teams were tied at one after one before the Jr. Miners struck for three unanswered goals in the second. The teams played a scoreless third period. Rookie Nick Walsh picked up the win for Glace Bay while Shawn Jeffrey took the loss. This was the third straight meeting between the teams with Glace Bay winning all three. At the Bay Plex in Glace Bay the play of the Miners took the night off as the Pictou County Scotians picked up their 11th win of the year. The loss was just the 6th for Glace Bay’s but second to Pictou. Back on October 27th the Scotians served the Jr. Miners a 3-2 loss in Trenton. Pictou County leading scorer Brandon Verge paced the Scotians with four points on two goals and two assists. Brad MacEachern also potted a pair of tallies for the Scotians. Steven MacNeil, Keenan Lima and Craig Matheson rounded out the Pictou County scoring with Matheson also chipping in with a pair of assists. Jason Thorpe and Lucas Eshelman both added three assists to the Scotians cause. Dylan Bork, Drew Wilcox and Mark Gouthro replied for the Jr. Miners. Pictou had a 3-1 lead after one; 6-2 after two with both teams adding a single in the third. Spencer Scott picked up the win for the Scotians while Scott MacDonald, while doing everything he could to give his team a chance with great saves, was tagged with the loss.
