Miners Strike the first blow in Sid Rowe Finals
2014-03-11Glace Bay, NS. March 10, 2014. Tuesday night in Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League Sid Rowe final play, the Glace Bay Jr. Miners struck first with a 3-1 win over the Strait Pirates, in an all Cape Breton division final, to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
At the Bay Plex playoff leading scorer JM Walsh opened the scoring, with the only goal of the period, a power play tally from Nick Gouthro and Lincoln Bradley.
Shots in the period favoured the Jr. Miners 11-6.
The Jr. Miners went up 2-0 when Jordan Langlois converted with Tyler Pyke and Sean Ferguson with just under two minutes to play in the middle period.
The Jr. Miners controlled the shot clock 16-12 for a two period total of 27-18.
In the third David Greencorn cut the Miners lead in half at 2-1 from Morgan Timmons and Marc Fougere but just 14 seconds later the Miners regained their 2-goal cushion when Kyle Peck finished from Mark Gouthro and Lincoln Bradley. The Jr. Miners hung on to take game one in a fairly mild contest which saw only one penalty each.
Nick Walsh picked up his fourth win of the playoffs while Keagan Butler was tagged with the loss.
Final shots were 35-28 Glace Bay.
Game two in this series will be Friday night in Glace Bay at 7:30 pm.
