Series Even After Junior Miners Drop Game #4 to Sackville
2014-04-08SACKVILLE — The Glace Bay Junior Miners and Sackville Blazers are all square in their best-of-seven Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League championship series.
Sackville, NS. April 7,2014. Monday night, at the Sackville Arena, the Sackville Blazers battled the Glace Bay Junior Miners to a 5-1 win to even their best-of-seven league final at two games apiece. After four games each team has split at home. Game five will be Saturday night in Glace Bay.
The Blazers, had the only goal of the opening period, which turned out to be the prettiest of the night. Blazer team captain Shayne Oderkirk dangled, deked and slipped by several Glace Bay players before passing off to Justin Hessian who flipped it under the crossbar for a 1-0 Blazer lead heading into the first intermission. The teams played a wide open first period with some heavy hits handed out by Colton Abraham and Sean Ferguson of the Junior Miners.
After twenty minutes shots were dead even at 10 apiece.
In the second a good second effort by Matt Arthur resulted in the Blazers going up 2-0 halfway through the middle period. Brett Arthur and Adam Brown drew the assists. The Blazers went up 3-0 when Andrew Smardon snapped a wrister from the left side which Glace Bay goaltender Nick Walsh manage to get a piece of but not before it landed in back of the net. Brett Arthur picked up the single assist. A minute later Glace Bay finally got on the board when centreman Chris Ross won the draw cleanly to Colton Abraham on the point and the big defenseman drilled it through the legs of Blazer goaltender Jonathan Boutin.
Shots in the period were only 9-5 for Sackville but the Blazers had a 3-1 lead on the score clock.
In the third the Blazers added two more. First Oderkirk, with some more fancy work, worked the puck around several Glace Bay defenders before finding Andrew Skinner alone where the young winger notched his 8th of the playoffs. Braden Kamermans also drew an assist. With just over a minute to play rangy centreman Brett Arthur, with his 3rd point of the night, managed to re-direct a Brian Reardon point shot over the shoulder of Walsh. Adam Brown also picked up an assist, his second of the night.
Shots in the period were held to seven apiece with the Blazers having a 26-22 advantage.
Jonathan Boutin picked up his 10th win while Nick Walsh suffered just his 2nd loss to go with seven wins.
The teams will return to action Saturday night in Glace Bay at the BAYplex for a 7:30 pm start before returning to Sackville Friday night April 18th
