Junior Miners Suffer Heartbreaking OT Loss - Game 7 On Sunday

2014-04-19

Lower Sackville, NS. April 18, 2014 Friday night in Lower Sackville the Sackville Blazers and Glace Bay Junior Miners played sixty-one minutes and thirty-six seconds of scoreless hockey before Blazer captain Shayne Oderkirk managed to break the scoreless tie just over a minute into the first overtime period.

Hard-nosed winger Andrew Skinner battled the puck in behind the Glace Bay net before slipping it through the high slot to Oderkirk and the slick Oderkirk made no mistake as he flipped it high over a fallen Nick Walsh.

Both goaltenders, but especially Jonathan Boutin,  were called upon to bail their teams out all night. In the last five minutes of the third the PEI Rocket draft pick Boutin continued to foil the Glace Bay shooters. On one instance Boutin’s big glove robbed Sam Johnson from five feet out then several big pad saves kept the score at zeros. The Blazers too had their chances when Cody Peveril missed on the open side with just over a minute to play in the final period.

Boutin picked up his eleventh win handling all 34 Glace Bay shots while Nick Walsh was tagged with the tough loss just his third of the playoff.

Game seven will shift to the Bay Plex in Glace Bay Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm. The winner will represent Nova Scotia at the Don Johnson Cup starting April 22nd to April 27th.
