Late heroics give Glace Bay Miners a win in home opener

GLACE BAY - Chris Ross scored his 2nd goal of the evening with 25 seconds left in regulation time to give the Glace Bay Junior Miners a win in their 2014-15 home opener at the BAYplex on Saturday.

The Miners, who trailed 3-1 heading into the third period, rallied for three late goals to earn a 4-3 victory over the visiting Liverpool Privateers.

After a scoreless first period, Liverpool opened the scoring with a goal by Cody Slaght before John Michael Walsh scored on the powerplay to tie the game.

But, two late second period markers gave the Privateers the lead heading into the final frame.

Goals by Ross and Chris Osmond evened the score setting the scene for Ross's dramtic game winner just before the buzzer.

Glace Bay outshot Liverpool 52-28.

Miners goalie Scott MacDonald made 25 saves while his Privateers counterpart, Jacob Demspey, a former Halifax Moosehead, stopped 48 shots.

Walsh had two assists to go with his goal while Ryan Jackson and Drew Wilcox each had two assists.

The Miners are now 2-1 on the campaign and lead the Sid Rowe Division while Liverpool is 3-1 afer losing their first game of the season.

Glace Bay is back in action on Sunday when they travel to Trenton for a 7:00p.m. start against the Pictou County Scotians.
